Tips For Styling Holiday Family Photos

Happy December, friends! I don’t know about you, but over here we are already counting down ‘til our next break. What can I say? We are more than ready to spend some quality downtime together, and take a breather from the regular schedules and routines. We’re road-tripping to a few places this month, then plan on hunkering down for Christmas break with some warm apple pie, not-so-hot hot cocoa (for the kids!), coffee (for me!), and my mom’s delicious (second-to-none) homemade tamales!

Also, on my agenda this week is creating our annual Christmas card (Shutterfly is my favorite resource for gorgeous card designs and superb customer service), and since we just got our family photos back from the incredibly talented and lovely photographer, Jules, from Love Light Jules, I’m excited to get started! Today on the blog I’m sharing all of my favorite photos from the shoot, along with my best tips and ideas for styling family photos.

Fall-2019-5

Once again, I turned to Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, Gap, and Target, to plan our family outfits. They are the easiest spots I’ve found to effortlessly coordinate the entire family, in the styles we each love. The colors and patterns are right up my classic-loving alley, and the styles are more timeless than trendy. Not to mention, the prices are on the budget-friendly side (if you hang with me and know how/when to find the deals!) and their styles never disappoint.

Fall-2019-11

This year we went with classic hues—navy blue accented by burgundy, and a splash of grey, with a touch of sparkle, gold metallic, anchored by chestnut brown. My little fashionista, Valentina, and I instantly fell for her adorable burgundy speckled with navy blue, so naturally her Tucker + Tate 2-fer and my Eliza J. sweater dress easily became the catalysts for the family outfits. My husband’s new favorite suede boots he found at Nordstrom Rack earlier in the season easily paired with anything, so that made for easy peasy matching. Check them out online now, they’re priced at under $60!

Fall-2019-31

Fit Tip: The sweater dress ran true to size, and I’m wearing a small with a whole lot of shapewear underneath, ha! As for the hubby, I gave him the colors I wanted him in and he chose the styles. He opted for old-faithful Gap for his grey raglan crewneck sweater and his tried-and-true dark denim straight jeans.

Fall-2019-7

Fit Tip: Our sweet and spunky girl, Valentina, is extra-sensitive to fabrics and fit, so we really appreciate softness and quality of Tucker + Tate dresses for little gals like ours.

Fall-2019-1

Fit Tip: For our little man, lightning Eugene, I always like to buy on the smaller size since I know button-downs and pants in general look better fitted as opposed to over-sized on my toddler. I found his adorable Osh Kosh B’gosh vest and shirt with bow tie at Target. My boy turns 3 in February but I still mostly purchase 2T to avoid having clothes fit him too big. Of course, do what suits you and your family. I’m simply sharing what I like to do, especially in the case of a dressier look for the annual (semi-formal) family photo.

ALL THE TIPS & TRICKS FROM YOURS TRULY…

Determine the feel of the photo and card you want…do you want a theme, festive, everyday, seasonal?  From there, choose outfits that make sense in that setting. Remember seasonal props might be fun, but if you plan on displaying the pictures year-round in your home, you might want to reconsider wearing Santa hats.

Consider your photo location and background. What you wear should somewhat reflect your environment, and the colors should be visible.

Start with a single piece and build around it. If you fall in love with a color for your little girl, or a particular style for yourself, use that as your base, and build from there.

To keep us coordinated, I think of the family as one single outfit, as opposed to four individual ones. If you can interchange items between outfits, then they work as a whole. You want the people to shine, not necessarily the uniformity of a group.

To keep us coordinated, I think of the family as one single outfit, as opposed to four individual ones. If you can interchange items between outfits, then they work as a whole. You want the people to shine, not the uniformity of the group.

Shopping a single store or at least minimizing the number of stores, such as, Nordstrom, Gap or Target, makes mixing-and-matching for the whole family a lot easier, since the color palettes and styles usually coordinate across departments.

Give each person in the family a say in what they wear. They’ll be a lot more relaxed if they feel like themselves (and aren’t wearing scratchy fabrics!).

Don’t shy away from pattern and texture, as it adds interest and richness and layers to your photos, just be sure to vary the scales. I cannot street this enough! It makes all the difference, trust me.

Skip the graphics and characters. You want the focus to be faces, not clothes.

Have a plan before you drag everyone in, so kids (or pets or husband, ha!) don’t grow weary before you even get started. And remember to stay calm (and flexible!)… your attitude will set the mood for the rest of the family.

Outfits don’t come together overnight, so if you can, allow yourself plenty of time before the shoot. I know it may seem crazy to some, but I actually start shopping for outfits in August to allow myself plenty of time for trying on, exchanges, and coordinating altogether. No matter how many deep breaths you take, if you come to the shoot frazzled, it is likely to show in your body language.

Don’t expect to get the shot in one take either…we sometimes literally shoot over 100 to capture the right few. And what always works for me is, bribing your family with treats after.

But most importantly, have fun! The idea is to capture your family’s dynamic, not always to create the perfect photo. Take it from me, people will notice the joy on your kid’s faces, not their outfit. And if the whole thing is too overwhelming, just have everyone wear what’s most comfortable, and take the photos in black and white—a great tip I once heard during my internship back in college.

My Top TEN Macy’s I.N.C. Favorites

I recently had the great pleasure of being a part of the Renovation Celebration at Macy’s Union Square in San Francisco. For the two-day extravaganza, I was honored to be styled by the lovely and talented, Favi Vega, and model the hottest I.N.C. (International Concepts, Created for Macy’s) looks of the season. I was so inspired by the I.N.C. holiday vibes that I decided to compile my list of favorites to share with you. Be it light-catching metallic, autumn-approved textural tones, or a favorite pink hue, make your way through this on-trend and off-duty-cool list with these 10 (ok 11, I couldn’t resist!) you won’t want to pass up this season. Dress To Impress With These Four Dress Styles

COMFY & CASUAL SHIFT DRESS

Meet this fall’s simplest outfit idea. The faithful frock makes getting dressed easy because you don’t worry about matching tops to bottoms. I love the pop of color these leopard flats to add interest to the solid hue and classic silhouette of the dress. Slay and play(ful).

ELEGANT & ELEVATED A-LINE DRESS

Take your look up a notch. Layer it under a classic blazer, add a stacked heel in a striking color, paired with metallic hoop earrings, and you’re ready for your day in the office or night on the town.

COOL & RELAXED GEO PRINT SHIRTDRESS

A mixed-print midi choice complete with collar, cuffs, and waist belt is the perfect quirky addition for your fall wardrobe. The plaid and print combo offer a world of opportunity for your accessories and shoes to play along as well. Opt for classic or edgy, wedges or kitten heels, this dress holds transitional-season style while the sleeve-length and darker tones keep you grounded in fall mode.

FLIRTY & FEMININE MIDI WRAP DRESS

Dressy fabrics such as silk or satin add sophistication, as does a timeless color choice such as black. Balance rich, classic black with a textured block heel in a neutral hue. A sash in the same hue as dress adds shape, though, for more structure you could always swap for a gleaming buckle and leather option that further elevates your already sleek, visual appeal.

TEN FASHION DO’S FOR FALL

1.  Embrace the lace

When it comes to fall details, choose not-so-obvious options like lace (or embroidery) to vamp up your cool-weather wardrobe. Delicate details are key especially when the layers and booties come out to play!

2.  White sneakers are keepers (yes, even in the fall.)

Clean white kicks are always a summertime staple, but what about keeping them around for the fall—and you can pair them with everything from jeans to sundresses to a mini. Proven to be super cute all year round and oh-so-comfy.

  1. Explore prints and patterns

The fall season is packed with events, especially as a mom with the hustle and bustle of back-to-school. Try something new this year and show up to the next PTA meeting, girls’ brunch or autumn wedding wearing an unexpected print or a splash of geometric pattern. In a sea of solids and stripes, you’ll be so glad you did!

4.  Pick the perfect pair of black leggings (that flatter and fit)

It’ll soon be leggings season, so pick one pair that fits and flatters you and stick with them! Go on the hunt for the perfect ankle length, even if it means paying someone to alter them for you. The extra spending is completely worth it when you factor in how amazing you’ll feel in your fantastic fitting leggings.

  1. Slip into some mules for upping your fall cool

This time of year is a perfect time to find a new pair of mules. With or without heel or perhaps with a peep-toe, the choice of flair is totally up to you! Mules are great for their comfort & ease (practically like flip flops). A bold color or textural touch adds even more style to your step and takes every fall outfit to the next level.

  1. Elevate your denim

Distressed denim paired with dressier pieces results in a high-low contrasting look that is so fashion. Try your distressed jeans or cutoffs with a flirty top, a cute clutch and a pair of block heel mules, and you have yourself your next date night look!

  1. Dare to wear your favorite scarf

Try a lightweight scarf in a natural or fiber to keep things on the cooler side and still get that layered fall ensemble. You can opt for light in color as well (cream, beige, or periwinkle for example) if you aren’t quite ready for those chestnut tones yet.

  1. Dip into a new hue

Pick pieces with a serious punch of color like cobalt blue or emerald green. Pair your punch with a heavy dose of neutrals you already know and love.

  1. Choose a lightweight knit

When it comes to fabrics, choose lighter options like cotton, rayon, even linen (for those in warmer climates). Feeling fall-ready in our outfits is a must indeed, but breathability and comfort are key always, but especially during a transitional season.

  1. Black jeans are everything

When the temperatures finally drop, nothing looks cooler or more put together than cool, black denim. Try pairing any black jeans or skirt with a top in a conversational print and a pair of suede slides. Instant fall!

The Versatile Must-Have Bag Color for Spring

ChristinaBestPhotography_Alma_OldSac_-5Let’s be honest, as a mom of two under five, this charming little crossbody is not realistic for carrying all the things I need most days, especially weekdays, between hustle and bustle of drop-off, pick-up, daycare, swim lessons, ballet practice, grocery runs and work. It’s a real jungle out there, and I certainly need a bag the size of The Amazon to hold everything, but this bag I’m sharing with you today certainly works for date night and errand-running on weekends! Size aside, we’re here to talk color, so here are my thoughts on the most versatile and wearable handbag hue, pinkish taupe.

Handbags are a fantastic way to add character to a look. The question is, who has the time or desire to be fussing with multiple bags during the week? I think it’s safe to say we’re all searching for that one good bag to take us through a solid week, at the very minimum. That said, it’s difficult in my opinion to commit to such an extreme color as black to wear every day because of its limitations and downright uninteresting appearance. We inevitably resort to then brown or beige for our everyday choice, we all do. But I’m here to tell you beige doesn’t have to be boring! Opt for a pinkish taupe instead, like the one I’m donning here. While wearing a bag from the taupe family may feel boring to some, this is your everyday bag and has to complement all of your looks. You want to make sure it stands apart from your outfit, without standing out. Yes, you can certainly make it special if you so desire; that is, if there is going to be a bag you splurge on, let this everyday bag be the one. If you don’t care to spend on a luxury bag, and you’d rather go all in on a deal (like myself!) then that’s ok, too. What’s important is that you like your bag. This pinkish taupe is oozing with promise and versatility—it’s sure to pair well with your browns, neutrals, florals, stripes, denim, and even blacks.

Last bit of advice before you leave for your pinkish taupe hunt, especially for the mothers making moves all day with their little ones, make sure your bag has a shoulder strap if possible. Being defeated by your purse isn’t chic nor effective; being able to navigate your way through the day with both hands definitely is.
